About Google Scholar

Free search engine for scholarly papers, theses and books, with citation counts and links to free versions.

Google Scholar searches academic literature: journal articles, conference papers, theses, preprints, books and court opinions. Each result shows where it was published, how many later works cite it and, where one exists, a link to a free copy.

The citation links are its most useful feature. Clicking "Cited by" shows newer papers that reference a study, which helps you see whether a finding held up or was questioned. You can also set alerts for new papers on a topic and save results to a personal library.

Scholar doesn't write AI summaries, so you read the papers yourself. It includes preprints and less selective venues alongside peer-reviewed journals, so check where a paper appeared and whether it has been retracted or updated before you rely on it.
