Privacy-minded search engines start from a different deal than the large engines. Instead of building a detailed profile of each user to target ads, they say they keep little or no history tied to you and show ads based on the words you searched, or charge a subscription and show no ads at all. DuckDuckGo, Startpage, Mojeek, Qwant and Ecosia are free with ads. Kagi is paid. Brave Search offers both.
Where the results come from varies more than people expect. Some of these engines run their own crawler and index, as Brave and Mojeek do, while others buy results from a larger engine and add their own ranking and privacy layer on top. Startpage, for example, shows Google results without passing your identity to Google. An independent index can give genuinely different results; a licensed one tends to feel familiar.
Many now add AI as well. DuckDuckGo can show an AI-written answer for some searches and offers a separate AI chat. Brave Search writes answers with links above its results. Kagi summarizes results when you end a query with a question mark. These features change what happens to your query, because it may be sent to an AI model, sometimes run by another company, so read how each engine handles that and whether you can turn it off.

Before you switch, read the privacy policy rather than the homepage slogan. Look for what is logged, for how long, whether IP addresses are stored, which partners receive queries and where the company is based. Then try the engine for a week on your real searches. Local searches, recent news and niche topics are where the differences show most.
Switching is cheap to undo. Set the new engine as the default in your browser, keep your old one a click away for the searches where it does better, and decide after you have used both on real questions.
Privacy is also shaped by what happens around the search engine. Your browser, your extensions and whether you are signed in to other services all affect what is collected about you. A private search engine helps most when paired with a browser that blocks trackers and a habit of signing out of accounts you don't need while searching. Some of these engines offer their own browsers or extensions to make that easier, and settings such as safe search, region and language are usually stored on your device instead of an account.
Each makes its own promises, so read the policy. Look at what is logged, how long it is kept, whether your IP address is stored and which partners see your queries. A policy you can read beats a slogan.
Several do. DuckDuckGo, Brave Search and Kagi all offer AI-written answers or chat. Check whether the feature is on by default, which model runs it and what is sent to it, and turn it off if you prefer plain results.
Some engines run their own index, others license results from a bigger engine and rank them differently. Local results and very recent news are where the gaps usually show. Try the engine on the searches you do most.
It can be if you search a lot and dislike ads and spam pages. Paid engines such as Kagi add controls like blocking sites. Use the trial on your normal searches before committing to a long plan.
